According to the legend, towards 271, the Probus General remained and allowed the culture of the vine prohibited by Domitien. Is this authorization at the origin of the name of Provins?  "Vines of Probus"? (Probi Vinum).

In 485, whereas the Roman General Syagrius orders the Castrum, Clovis has just gained the victory of Soissons and seizes Provins.

The first authentic texts (towards 802) teach us that Provins was already an important city, since Charlemagne sends its "Missi Dominici". After that, the city beats its own currency.

The dismemberment of the Carolingian Empire detaches Provins from of the crown of France and place the city under the domination of the Counts de Vermandois (936-1019).

In 996, in the wooded marsh at the foot of the "Ville-Haute", close to a vault dedicated to Saint Médard, a miracle took place. It made it possible to discover relics of Saint-Ayoul, the abbot of Lérins that the monks of Saint-Benoit fleeing the Norman had hidden there.

This discovery is at the origin of the construction of a monastery and a church dedicated to Saint-Ayoul. Then it was the deforestation and the birth of the "Ville-Basse" ("low town").
